Alfa Fredensborg and addiction treatment
We are a modern treatment centre with treatment methods that are always up to date.
We participate and acquire the latest knowledge at conferences both at home and abroad.
By keeping in touch with other international treatment centres, we ensure that the most effective and modern treatment approach is also offered in Denmark.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
We use this method throughout the one-to-one and group therapy sessions.
Residents work with CBT mindmaps, exploring their hidden relapse patterns. Conditioned responses and automatic thoughts are explored here so that the resident becomes an expert on his or her own habits and thought patterns.
Our workload is unique and only available at Alfa Fredensborg and AlfaRehab.
The vast majority of our residents go through this curriculum and it is a very good tool to find your own “relapse triggers”. These relapse patterns will often lead to relapse if not uncovered while the resident is in treatment.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)
EMDR is an integrative psychotherapeutic therapy that has helped millions of people of all ages worldwide to be freed from many types of psychological stress.
Our psychologist is certified in the trauma treatment form EMDR.
The old idea that trauma is only for those who have been abused or beaten as children is no longer valid. People who find themselves in unpredictable and stressful situations for long periods of time develop PTSD symptoms that are comparable to what was previously classified as trauma.
Citizens who have lived in an abusive environment or have been burdened by high stress levels for a long time will often experience some of these symptoms:
- You relive the catastrophic event in the form of nightmares and haunting memories. The consequences are anxiety, insomnia and strong tension in the muscles
- General increased vigilance. The slightest unexpected sound makes you cringe
- Change of personality, perhaps decreased interest in things you were previously engaged in. Decreased ability to feel love and closeness to other people. Reduced interest in self and often indifference.
- Difficulty concentrating and remembering
If a person is using intoxicants at the same time as having some of these symptoms, the situation can become quite overwhelming and day treatment will be the best solution.
Mindfulness and Yoga
Mindfulness and yoga are on the programme several times a week.
By working in this way through body and breath, feelings and thoughts will calm down without the need to talk about them in cognitive therapy.
In the same way as EMDR, the senses will find peace and stress will leave the body. The result is a better night’s sleep, more energy in the waking hours and a significantly better benefit from the other elements of the treatment.
Mindfulness has its roots in Buddhism. According to Buddhism, man’s pursuit of lasting happiness and attempt to avoid pain only leads to suffering. We feel pain because nothing lasts and we all get sick, old and die.
But your life is here and now! When you build on it from here, there’s a good chance you’ll have a good starting point.
Yoga is a thousand-year-old system of training the body and mind.
Yoga is not religious or mystical, but basically about being present in what you are doing right now, with an abundance of joy and renewed energy.
Is abuse the problem or the solution?
Drug dependence is a complex problem and biological, psychological and social elements should be built into treatment to ensure an effective outcome.
Depending on the preferred type of drug, social elements will play a role in brain plasticity, increased tolerance, organ degradation and reduced quality of life.
Drugs can affect
- Social elements. So great a rush that you lose the ability to go to work, attend school and make friends. If the drug is illegal there will be a risk of crime
- Brain plasticity. Recent research shows that the brain changes throughout life. So if you use some areas of the brain a lot, those areas will become stronger and more efficient. Are you primarily guided by your impulses (coming from the instinctive level of the brain), without thinking through the consequences of your actions (what the frontal lobe is used for). Then you will find that the frontal lobe (reason) becomes weaker and weaker while the impulses become stronger and stronger.
- Increased tolerance. When you repeatedly use a behaviour, alcohol or a drug, you will experience increased tolerance. This is an acclimatisation of both body and mind to expect and handle larger quantities.
- Decomposition of organs. many drugs have the potential to destroy organs. In particular, solvents such as alcohol and other solvents can be very harmful to the brain, nerves and intestines. Central stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine can cause psychosis and other psychological damage that can be long-lasting. Hashish is not directly physically harmful, except that smoking puts a strain on the lungs. It is, however, a psychoactive substance that can cause changes in the psyche. What they all have in common is that the drugs are so addictive that they override healthy lifestyles such as diet and exercise.
- Decreased quality of life. Being caught up in substance abuse can negatively affect education, work, family and friendships. When addiction takes over most of your waking attention, there’s little time left to create a meaningful life.
Many people who arrive find that they are using intoxicants even though they have promised themselves to stop and they have often tried this in outpatient programmes. But they have had to give up because the effects of the drugs far outweigh the problems in their lives.
Perhaps the process is so advanced that the drugs are taken just to feel healthy and to function reasonably normally.
Environments and settings in modern addiction treatment
All residents have their own room, furnished like a hotel with TV internet and other necessities.
Alfa Fredensborg is located on the outskirts of Fredensborg Town on a 19,000 m2 park-like site. The building is divided into several units so that you can experience space and time for contemplation.
Activities
There are outdoor and external activities such as a fitness centre, teambuilding track, outdoor training, own gym including badminton and table tennis.
The treatment centre is optimised to function as a kind of hotel with built-in therapy.
The food is good
Part of modern addiction treatment is also food. Our chef makes great food and the freshly baked morning rolls are one of the highlights of the day.
The strong community and good atmosphere means that almost everyone who completes a stay with us will have made one or two new friends.
A strong team is ready to help
The staff consists of psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, educators and some of them have experience with previous abuse in themselves or in the family. See our staff here

Alfa Fredensborg is not a “Minnesota” treatment centre and does not work with steps and higher power.
We respect people’s right to decide for themselves whether or not to be a believer. We believe that all people have the resources necessary to live happy and meaningful lives.
We do not stand in the way of those who wish to participate in self-help groups. But it’s important to us that it happens entirely of our own free will.
If residents wish to participate in self-help groups, we are happy to provide cars and it is also possible to participate in the internal self-help group that comes to us once a week.
